Clean Ceiling Fan Blades Without Raining Dust
· Mark Mendenhall
Everybody's done it: wiped a ceiling fan blade and watched a sheet of dust float down onto everything. The pillowcase method keeps the mess contained.
How to do it
- Turn the fan off and let it stop completely. Use a sturdy step ladder — never stand on the bed.
- Slip an old pillowcase over one blade, all the way to the motor.
- Press lightly top and bottom and pull the case toward you. The dust comes off inside the case.
- Repeat for each blade, then shake the pillowcase outside and wash it.
While you're up there in summer, check the fan direction switch — blades should spin counterclockwise in summer to push air down on you.
