Clean Your Outdoor Light Fixtures for Brighter Light

· Mark Mendenhall

Porch and yard lights dim so gradually you don't notice — until you clean one and it looks twice as bright. Dust, pollen, and a summer's worth of bugs coat the inside of every fixture.

How to do it

  1. Turn the light off and let the bulb cool completely. For hardwired fixtures, flip the breaker if you'll be removing covers near wiring.
  2. Remove the cover or glass panels and shake out the bug collection.
  3. Wash glass in warm soapy water, dry it fully, and wipe the bulb itself with a dry cloth (or upgrade to an LED rated for enclosed fixtures).
  4. Reassemble and enjoy the porch you forgot you had.

While you're at it, check that the fixture's weep holes at the bottom are clear so rain that gets in can get out.
