Disguise a Small Chip in Tile With a Dab of Paint

· Mark Mendenhall

A dropped skillet or tool can chip a floor tile in a spot your eye goes to every day. Replacing the tile is a real job. Disguising the chip takes ten minutes.

How to do it

  1. Clean the chip with rubbing alcohol so the paint sticks.
  2. Using a fine artist brush, dab in enamel paint or even nail polish matched to the tile color. Thin coats, not one blob.
  3. Let each coat dry and add another until the chip is level with the glaze.
  4. Seal with a dab of clear nail polish for shine.

On white or light tile this is nearly invisible. It's a cosmetic fix, not a repair — a chipped tile in a wet area like a shower floor should get real attention so water doesn't get under it.
