Fix a Loose Toilet Handle Before It Stops Flushing
· Mark Mendenhall
A toilet handle you have to jiggle or hold down is usually just loose — but people tighten it the wrong way for months because the nut inside the tank is reverse-threaded.
How to do it
- Take off the tank lid and look where the handle comes through.
- The plastic or metal nut on the inside threads on backwards: turn it counterclockwise (viewed from inside the tank) to tighten.
- Snug it firm with your fingers or a gentle wrench turn.
- Make sure the chain still hangs with a little slack and the arm doesn't hit the lid.
While you're in there, give the flapper a look — if it's warped or slimy, a new one costs a few dollars and stops mystery running toilets.
