Fix a Squeaky Floor Spot With Powder
· Mark Mendenhall
A squeak in the floor is usually two boards — or a board and a nail — rubbing together. Before you think about major repairs, try lubricating the joint with powder.
How to do it
- Find the exact squeaky spot by walking the area slowly.
- Sprinkle talcum powder, powdered graphite, or even baking soda generously over the seams there.
- Work it into the cracks by sweeping it back and forth, then walk on the spot to drive it down.
- Wipe up the excess.
This silences most minor squeaks on hardwood and under carpet edges. A squeak that comes with a spongy, soft feel in the floor is different — that can be water damage and deserves a closer look.
