Fix Weak Water Pressure by Cleaning the Faucet Aerator
· Mark Mendenhall
If one faucet in the house has gone weak while the rest are fine, don't call a plumber yet. The aerator — the little mesh cap where the water comes out — is likely clogged with sand and mineral grit.
How to do it
- Unscrew the aerator by hand; use pliers with a rag over it if it's stuck.
- Note the order of the little screens and washers so it goes back together right.
- Soak the parts in white vinegar for an hour, then brush them clean.
- Rinse, reassemble, and screw it back on hand-tight.
Water should come out strong and even. The same trick works on showerheads with removable faces, and it's worth doing once a year in Florida's sandy water.
