Get Clean Paint Lines With Tape and a Damp Rag
· Mark Mendenhall
Everybody tapes before painting, and half the time paint still bleeds under. The tape isn't the problem — the unsealed edge is. A damp rag fixes it.
How to do it
- Apply painter's tape and press it down firmly along the edge that matters.
- Run a damp (not wet) rag along that edge to activate the seal.
- Pro move: paint the edge first with the color that's UNDER the tape. Any bleed is the old color and disappears.
- Paint your new color, and pull the tape while the paint is still slightly wet, pulling at a 45-degree angle away from the line.
Pulling tape after paint fully dries is how the new paint peels off with it. Timing and that damp rag are the whole game.
