Keep Walkways From Getting Slippery With Algae
· Mark Mendenhall
In Florida shade and humidity, sidewalks and patios grow a green algae film that's slick as ice when wet. Somebody eventually goes down on it. Keep ahead of it.
How to handle it
- Scrub the area with a stiff broom and a solution of water with a cup of oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) per gallon. It's gentler on plants than chlorine.
- Let it sit 15 minutes, scrub again, and rinse.
- Trim back whatever is shading the spot so the sun can dry it. Damp shade is the whole problem.
- Repeat at the start of rainy season and mid-summer.
A pressure washer works too, but keep the nozzle moving and don't blast the surface into pits — etched concrete grows algae back even faster.
