Patch a Small Hole in Drywall Without a Call to a Pro
· Mark Mendenhall
Holes up to about six inches across are a homeowner-level repair. The self-adhesive mesh patches at the hardware store make it nearly foolproof.
How to do it
- Clean loose paper and crumbs from the hole. Push any dented drywall slightly inward.
- Stick the mesh patch centered over the hole.
- Spread a thin layer of joint compound over the whole patch with a putty knife, feathering the edges out wide.
- Let it dry, sand smooth, and add a second thin coat. Sand, prime, and paint.
The secret is thin coats spread wider than you think — a small mound telegraphs through paint, but a wide, thin feather disappears. Always prime patched compound or the paint will flash dull over it.
