Remove Rust Rings and Stains With a Wet Pumice Stone
· Mark Mendenhall
The orange ring in the toilet bowl or rust marks in the sink that laugh at every spray cleaner will surrender to a pumice stone — if you use it right.
The rules
- Wet the stone and wet the surface, and keep both wet the whole time. A dry pumice stone can scratch.
- Rub gently on the stain with light pressure. Let the stone do the work.
- Test first in a hidden spot. Pumice is for porcelain, ceramic tile, and concrete — not for fiberglass tubs, acrylic, or plastic, which it will scratch.
The stone wears down as you use it, shaping itself to the bowl. For a toilet, flush midway to keep everything wet and see your progress. It's oddly satisfying work.
