Sharpen a Knife With the Bottom of a Mug
· Mark Mendenhall
A dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp one, because it slips. If you don't own a sharpener, flip over a heavy ceramic mug. That rough, unglazed ring on the bottom works like a fine sharpening stone.
How to do it
- Set the mug upside down on a damp towel so it won't slide.
- Hold the blade at about a 20-degree angle to the rough ring.
- Sweep the blade across the ring from heel to tip, like you're slicing a thin layer off it.
- Do 8 to 10 strokes per side, alternating.
- Wipe the blade clean before you use it.
It won't replace a real sharpening, but it'll bring a tired edge back for tonight's dinner.
