Stop a Door From Swinging Shut on Its Own

· Mark Mendenhall

Some doors just won't stay open — they creep shut on their own because the frame is a touch out of plumb. You don't need to rehang the door. You need friction in one hinge.

How to do it

  1. Close the door and tap the middle hinge pin up and out.
  2. Lay the pin on a hard surface and give the center one light tap with a hammer — you want a barely visible bend, not a banana.
  3. Drive the pin back in. It'll fit snug, and that snugness holds the door in place.

The door should now stay wherever you leave it. If it still drifts, do the same to the top pin. This old carpenter's trick costs nothing and takes five minutes.
