Stop Mud at the Door With the Two-Mat System
· Mark Mendenhall
Most of the dirt in your house walked in on shoes, and one doormat — no matter how cute — catches only a fraction of it. The commercial buildings have it figured out: two mats, two jobs.
Set it up
- Outside: a coarse scraper mat (coir or rubber) that knocks the mud, sand, and grass off soles.
- Inside: a longer absorbent runner that catches what's left plus the moisture. Long enough for two full steps — that's what actually wipes the shoe.
- Shake both mats out weekly and hose them monthly. A mat loaded with sand stops working and becomes a dirt dispenser.
In Florida's rainy season this cuts mopping dramatically, and it saves hard floors from the sand-grit sandpaper effect that dulls the finish.
