Store Leftover Paint So It's Usable Next Year
· Mark Mendenhall
Half a can of paint is money in the bank for touch-ups — if it isn't a skin-covered brick when you open it next year. Two habits save it.
How to store it right
- Wipe the rim channel clean so the lid seals fully.
- Lay plastic wrap directly on the paint surface, then tap the lid on tight. The wrap keeps air off the paint.
- Store the can upside down. Any skin that forms ends up on the lid end, and fresh paint is on top when you flip it back.
- Write the room and date on the lid with a marker. Future you says thanks.
- Keep it in the house or garage — never where it can freeze or bake.
For small amounts, pour the leftover into a clean glass jar with a tight lid. Less air in the container means longer life.
