My Dad the Hero

A Rhyming Story About Everyday Dads for Kids Ages 3–6

A wild and windy day means four rescue missions for one hardworking dad! When the fence blows flat overnight, Dad swings his hammer — thump, thump, thump — and stands it straight and tall before noon. Benny's bike tire hisses flat? Dad patches it tight and pumps it round again. Benny's kite gets stuck high in the tree? No need to climb — Dad grabs the rake and frees it with a gentle touch. And when the treehouse door squeaks and won't budge, one drop of oil from Dad's toolbox swings it free. Benny counts the jobs — one, two, three, four! — and declares what every kid already knows: My Dad's the best, hip-hooray!

The heart of the book comes in Dad's own words as he kneels down for a hug: "Heroes don't wear capes, my dear — they carry toolboxes, never fear! They come in every shape and size, with loving hearts and kind, kind eyes." Written in cheerful rhyming couplets full of thumps, pssshhs, and zooms, this 16-spread picture book celebrates everyday dads who fix our days and dry our tears.

A wonderful Father's Day gift, birthday surprise, or bedtime read for kids ages 3 to 6 who idolize their dads. The soft watercolor illustrations follow Benny and his dad from stormy gray skies to a golden sunset finale, with large easy-to-read text placed so it never covers the characters. At a cozy read-aloud length, it is perfect for one last story before lights-out — and guaranteed to earn Dad a very tight hug.
