The Big Dig

A Rhyming Excavator Story About Kindness for Kids Ages 3–6

Digger the excavator wakes with the sunrise, revs his engine — vroom, vroom, vroom! — and rolls out to the construction site for the biggest job of his day. But this isn't an ordinary dig: a mother duck comes waddling in with her five little ducklings in a row, asking Digger to dig them a pond — wide and deep, a place to splash, a place to leap!

The Big Dig follows Digger through a full, satisfying workday: marking the circle in the meadow, the first scoop of heavy clay, the fun rhythm of scoop-swing-dump as the dirt mountain grows sky-high. Friends stop by to cheer him on — Little Dozer waves hi-hi in his cap, Carla Crane leans over with her swinging hook, and Daisy Dump Truck toots her horn. By lunch, it's the biggest hole in all of town! Then the water flows in — whee, whee, whee! — and the ducklings waddle down the hill, slip and slide, and splash into their sparkling blue pond at sunset.

This rhyming picture book is a love letter to construction-loving kids: every scoop, swing, and dump is packed with satisfying sound words little ones will shout along with. And it all winds down with the sweetest goodnight ending — "Goodnight, Digger. Goodnight, pond. Sleep now, big friend — new jobs come at dawn."

Perfect for boys and girls ages 3–6 who adore excavators, dump trucks, and cranes, this 16-spread read-aloud is ideal for bedtime, preschool circle time, or as a gift for any little builder. It gently teaches kindness and helping others — Digger uses his big strong bucket to do something wonderful for the ducks.
