The One That Got Away

A Rhyming Fishing Tale for Grandpas and Grandkids Ages 3–6

Cast off for the lake with Benny and Grandpa in The One That Got Away — a rhyming fishing picture book written just for boys who love big catches and bigger stories.

It's a bright blue Saturday morning, and 5-year-old Benny is fishing with his Grandpa: tackle box, wriggly worms, and a whole lake full of possibility. When Benny's bobber goes down, the fight is ON — a silver flash leaps across the sky, the biggest fish either of them has ever seen. But SPROING — the hook slips free! As Benny stares at the empty lake, Grandpa has just the thing to cheer him up: the story of HIS whopper — the one that towed his boat clear across the lake, jumped so high it touched the moon, and sang a splishy tune.

Every spread rhymes, so it reads aloud like music at bedtime or story time. And the best part? Benny learns the family secret: each time you tell a fish story, the fish grows a little bigger. What starts as a lost catch ends as the warmest bonding moment — the story is the best catch of all.

Built for read-aloud routines: 16 full-color spreads (~557 words), soft watercolor art, and two lovable characters — Benny in his blue overalls and Grandpa in his red flannel — who stay consistent on every page. Perfect for ages 3–6, especially boys who love the outdoors, and a go-to gift for little anglers from parents, grandparents, and aunts/uncles who shop "books for boys."

Illustrations created with AI assistance and carefully art-directed for consistency; every page was hand-checked.
